Future Missions to Comets and Asteroids: Small Bodies with Big Questions
Pr. Mohamed Ramy El-Maarry
Director, Space and Planetary Science Center – Khalifa University of Science and Technology, UAE
IAP Physics Seminar Series will occur on Tuesday 17 April 24, at 14:00 at the UM6P campus (Ryad 8, 1st floor).
Abstract:
In this seminar, Pr. Mohamed Ramy El-Maarry is planning to give a short review of the significance of studying small bodies in our solar system, focusing afterwards on two future missions he is involved in: Comet Interceptor, and the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA). He will also go through the main missions’ architecture, the science questions they aim to address, and how Earth-based observations may help both missions.”
Biography:
Mohamed Ramy El-Maarry earned his bachelors degree in Geology and Chemistry in Cairo University. He followed it up with two European masters degrees in Sweden and France, and a PhD in Goettingen University in Germany for his work at the Max-Planck institute for solar system research. Dr El-Maarry has been involved with numerous space missions since 2006 for both ESA, NASA, and recently the UAE Space Agency.
He is currently the director of the “Space and Planetary Science Center” and an associate professor of planetary sciences at Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates. His research covers planetary surfaces with a focus on geomorphology and associated physical processes using a multi-disciplinary approach that involves data analysis of remote sensing data, modeling, lab work and comparative planetology mainly through fieldwork
