Abstract:
The Rare-Earth crisis in 2012 constitutes the kick-off to a renew interest on permanent magnets (PM), in particular, on rare-earth (RE) free or lean magnets and on PM-applications with low contain of Critical Raw Materials. This interest is enhanced because different technologies that support the EU Green Deal or the World Green Transition, employ RE permanent magnets. In my presentation I will present several studies focused on the optimization of the hard particles at the nanoscale to to get materials with best performances than ceramic magnets. First, I will discuss the magnetic properties of a series of M-type Sr ferrite nanoparticles in comparison of those of micrometric commercial powders. The magnetic hysteresis show that nanoparticles produced by solid reaction exhibit the largest coercive field, with the best values present in literature and commercial materials. However, the magnetic anisotropy of these particles, measured by Singular Point Detection, is smaller than the micrometric particles. I will discuss these differences considering the reversal process of each material and taking into account the size and the morphology. Second, I will show different approaches to obtain a progressive increase of the coercive field and of the energy product of Co- ferrite nanoparticles considering the optimization of the composition, the particle size and the micro-strains. Finally, I will discuss on the recycling of RE-permanent magnets through the example of the EIT-RM project INSPIRES.

He has been a post-doc at the Louis Néel Laboratory – CNR in Grenoble (France), at the University of Padua (Italy) and at the Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per la Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali in Florence (Italy). He is currently a Senior Researcher at the Istituto dei Materiali per l’Elettronica e il Magnetismo – CNR in Parma (Italy). He has particípate in a large number of Spanish, Italian and European projects, among which: EU REMCOMIC (BREU-150), Magnetometry Network (KIC-Raw Materials), FP-7 NANOMAGMA, FP7-NANOPYME and H2020-AMPHIBIAN and being responsible of different workpackage. Today he is involved in several projects on hard magnetic materials for the Green Transition: the EIT- Raw Materials project INSPIRES (www.inspires-magnet.eu), the Horizon Europe projects BEETHOVEN and GREEN, the italian MUR project HyperMag and the Italian National Centre on Sustainable Mobility. His activity is focused on nano-structured materials, both in the form of nanoparticles and thin films, for magnetism and for photonics, studying the relationships between the nano-structure and the electronic, optical and magnetic properties and the implications in the applications. Nowadays he is working on the development and study of new materials for rare-earth free or lean magnets and in the recycling of permanent magnets. He is the author of 131 peer reviewed publications (H index 30) and has participated in more than hundred national and international conferences, giving more than fifty oral presentations.
