IAP Physics Seminar Series will occur on Tuesday 22 October, at 11:15 at the UM6P campus (Ryad 8, 1st floor).
Abstract:
The study focuses on the properties of graphene, an allotrope of carbon, and its applications in gas sensors and seawater desalination. An ab-initio modeling and simulation of the interactions between graphene, graphite, and the molecules CO, N2, H2O, and NaCl were conducted. The results show an optimization of adsorption energies and optimal distances for the studied molecules, suggesting promising applications for gas sensors. Additionally, the analysis of the electronic and magnetic properties of graphite and nickel-doped graphite reveals a partially metallic behavior and highlights the impact of doping on magnetic moments. Finally, the study on the adsorption of NaCl and H2O on graphene aims to evaluate its potential for isolating NaCl in the seawater desalination process, thereby contributing to reducing filtration costs. These results provide valuable insights for theoretical and experimental research in the field of carbon[1]based materials.
Biography:
Abdellah SELLAM is an Associate Professor of Physics at LM6E Benguerir and holds a PhD in Materials Physics and Energy. His specialty lies in the study and modelling of graphene-based sensors and various allotropic forms of carbon. Currently, I am focusing on research regarding seawater filters based on graphene, a crucial area given that the most challenging step in water treatment is the isolation of NaCl from seawater. The methods currently used for desalinating seawater are often expensive, making it essential to develop new approaches to reduce filtration costs. With 24 years of teaching experience; Abdellah SELLAM has worked in various institutions, ranging from middle schools to high schools, as well as in Preparatory classes for Grandes Ecoles (CPGE). I have a Master’s degree in the fields of Physical and Chemical Sciences Education and Training, which has allowed me to acquire high-level pedagogical skills. My teaching methods vary between in-person, distance, and hybrid courses, reflecting my commitment to pedagogical innovation and the continuous improvement of science education.
